I've used the Mellita Coffee System for about 40 years. I find the system more convenient than coffee machines.

If the power goes off, you can still make coffee if you have a gas stove or a camp stove.

It is easy to brew exactly the amount of coffee you want, and exactly the strength that you want---including adjusting to new roast and grinds. You can even mix caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees if you wish. I often re-use the morning's grinds in the afternoon, by adding a spoon of decaffeinated coffee. That is more difficult with an automatic coffee machine.

In a way, the Mellita system is more "sanitary". It is easy to forget a used filter in a coffee maker, maybe for weeks if you go on a vacation, and find a fungus garden in their. You can't ignore a used Melitta filter, because it is out in the open.

Although most people use smaller Mellita filters and cones, I prefer the large #6 system. The #6 system (filters, cone, and caraf) is intended for brewing 4-8 cups at a time. However, the larger filter holds more water, and it drains faster, so you can brew 2 cups of coffee with a #6 filter faster than with a #4 filter. So the #6 system is faster and more flexible, at a very slightly higher cost for the filters.

If you grind your own coffee, the water (for 1-2 cups) is almost boiling by the time you've set up the filter, ground the coffee, and put away the coffee grinder. A #6 filter actually holds the water for about 2 cups of coffee, but drains so fast that pouring 4-8 cups of water through just takes perhaps 10--15 seconds. The correspondding #6 glass caraf is marked for up to 8 cups, but obviously it takes longer to boil the water for 8 or so cups of coffee.

It's as simple as it gets, the price of the filters is cheap, and the quality of the results as terrific. What else could you want?

Presuably, brown filters are easier on the environment---and on you, less chemicals having been used to manufacture them.

The specific Amazon product is probably the cheapest way to purchase the prefered filters.

HINT Fold over the "joined" edges of the filters. That makes them fit more securely in the cones, and more widely open. It makes pouring water in easier and minimizes accidents.

These are the best paper coffee filters I've found. Just make sure to fold over the crimped edges so that the filter doesn't come apart during brewing. I use the "pour over" method of brewing coffee with a filter cone because most coffee makers do not get the water hot enough for a proper brew. I brew directly in to a stainless carafe.

Unlike other reviewers, I received all 12 boxes of filters.

They're very good coffee filters and the price is right. The cost-per-filter here on Amazon is less than even the store brand at my local grocery store. I have used Melitta filters most of the time for the last 5 years or so, and I expect to continue using them. Here's why with comparisons to the competition:

Versus the metal cleanable filters: Fewer grounds get through with paper & it's disposable so no washing.

Versus the store brand: I have never had a Melitta rip between the coffee maker and the garbage and I have had the store brand rip. So I guess the double-crimped seams do make a difference. As for the flavor enhancing indentations, I ran a head-to-head flavor comparison yesterday between Melitta and a store brand filter, and I could not taste any difference.

Nevertheless, I recommend Melitta and I've done the price compare, so I buy my Melitta filters on Amazon.

In my opinion, the best way to make a cup (or more cups, using a larger filter), is to use a first-class paper filter inserted into a reusable filter cone and throw away the filter and the coffee grounds after it is used. Melitta makes the best single-use paper filters. I regularly use the #4 filter made of Natural Brown paper, with a ceramic #4 filter cone. This pack of 600 of these filters (in 6 boxes) was by far the best buy of these name brand filters that I could find. Kudos to Amazon for providing these in the smallest possible package!

I had one of these once and don't know what I did with it. I used it alone and didn't care for it. It didn't filter as well as paper. BUT...paper often collapses especially when the filters have been bent or mis-shapen and you aren't making a full pot of coffee. Then the grounds get into your coffee. YUK! So I'm getting another to use with my paper filters because they collapse so often. I put the paper inside the basket filter. That way my coffee is well filtered from grounds and anything else. If your paper filters often collapse and you HATE grounds in your coffee, this is a must if you have a Mr. Coffee or comparable coffee maker.

I bought this coffee filter at my local grocery store because it was the only cone one they had. I should have waited until my next trip to Walmart. This filter doesn't fit correctly in the filter holder. It isn't a true cone shaped. The first and only time I used it. It melted a little and the coffee leaked into the coffee carafe. Horrible experience. I paid .50 for this filter which was too much since it didn't work properly. Trying to save money isn't really saving if the item doesn't work. I urge you not to buy this coffee filter or anything that looks similar. There are others out there that look like this one, so be careful.

I've been using this in a college dorm room, and it's proven to be a perfect solution for the usual problems with brewing a simple, single cup of coffee in the morning, not to mention the cash that it's saved me at Peet's. It's easy to use and easy to clean, and it really does make a solid cup of brew--not the best I've ever had, but it's certainly not the worst by any stretch of the imagination. I bought the filter with my Teeccino (coffee substitute) order. Before I purchased, I read all the reviews. Unfortunately, I'm having the same problem as the other person who rated 3 stars...if you use the water diffuser, the water doesn't filter thru-it just sits there, stuck on top of the grounds. I have begun leaving out the diffuser and just using the filter, which makes for a very fast "brew" time. It seems like the holes in the filter are too small-may enlarge them myself, but I've written the company first to see if they can offer any tips before I void any warranty there might be. I'm wondering if the Teeccino grounds are too fine...will update if Swissgold responds to my inquiry...

I'm a bit of a skinflint so wasn't all too keen about forking out the money for this but it is worth every cent. I thought there's no point continuing to buy quality coffee if paper filters in my existing devices are going to absorb all the oils and fats that give the coffee its flavour. This little device on the other hand gives you the convenience of a drip with the taste of a French Press, you'll be amazed at the difference if you're used to brew methods using paper filters. Can't go wrong with this, I certainly won't be using anything else from now on.

I grieve for the other reviewers who paid for a case but only got a box of coffee filters. I got the whole case of twelve. These are the big kind, which fit into the Melitta 10 cup coffee maker. If you use these you know you need them and you hate to run out. There is nothing worse than running out of coffee filters. Have you ever had to fold up a paper towel, or perhaps one of those "basket style" filters to fit a cone? Don't do that. Have plenty of filters on hand. Buy them by the case.

I use these filters in my one-cup coffee maker. Even though that coffee maker has a screen filter, it is not very good. So these Melitta filters are used and they filter out the grounds from getting into the freshly brewed coffee. A pack of twelve (to a case) is a lot of filters, and they last me a long time (I only make coffee at home on weekends). Amazon seems to have the best price for these filters, a really great price!

Finally found No. 1 Filters! - A. McCuen - Northern Virginia, USA
I looked in all the local supermarkets but had no luck finding the No. 1 Melitta Cone Coffee Filters for my 1-cup coffeemaker. Finally I remembered the Amazon site and was rewarded for my persistence. 12 boxes sounds like a lot but since the filters are so small, 12 boxes don't take up that much storage space.

These are great, high-quality filters. The person who gave them a poor review was giving that bad review to the vendor, not the product. These are inexpensive and it doesn't make sense to pay shipping for them. You can buy these at the grocery store -- and I would recommend doing that on something this inexpensive.

My coffee filter order split off from the rest on my Amazon order and "given" to NetGrocer. Intead of the free shipping I was expecting, NetGrocer charged .54 shipping and handling for a .15 (100 paper Melitta coffee filters) item.

My wife prefers the natural filters over the bleached variety. Her mother prefers the Melitta brand over others. She happens to have grown up in Europe. So she (mother-in-law) is the real expert. I can't tell the difference. Both my wife and mother-in-law would rate this product higher than I do. Melitta is a great brand name, and we have never had any problems with anything that has the name Melitta on it. The only negative about it is the price. They say it is worth it, and I think it is a bit too pricey.
